Life is full of difficulties, surprises, joys and heartaches and the only thing constant is change. As the world around you shifts, you sometimes lack the support, resources, flexibility or insight to respond effectively and successfully to these changes. Or we may have been through past hardships that we are only now ready to work through. In either circumstance, engaging in Individual Counseling, also referred to as psychotherapy or therapy, will assist you in exploring the things that are getting in the way of living the life you want. At Authentic Recovery, we meet with most clients on a weekly basis for about an hour. During the first session we ask our clients what brought them in, and provide a safe, confidential and supportive space for them to tell us their stories. This type of therapy is available for adults, adolescents, and children.
The first few weeks of therapy are usually focused on understanding our clients and helping them understand who they are and what they need. We look at past and current relationships and experiences and explore how these things have informed the way that they approach their worlds now. We also look at current thoughts, habits, and feelings that may be causing inner or outer turmoil. We explore negative symptoms the client is experiencing as well as the positive resources she can draw on as she works to heal and grow.
Individual therapy offers a confidential and comforting place to discuss a number of things including major life transitions, concerns about one’s intimate relationship, feelings of depression or anxiety, addiction, trauma, or to simply gain knowledge and self-awareness. In times of stress we may find ourselves overeating or engaging in other destructive behaviors. Learning healthier coping strategies and facing confusing and often conflicting feelings can be positive steps towards living a healthier and happier life.
Individual therapy also provides a safe environment to deal with painful issues that we sometimes try to avoid — issues involving sexual, emotional or physical abuse in childhood or adulthood, dysfunctional family issues, or deep depressions and suicidal feelings.
Individual therapy can help you to feel more empowered, develop fresh insights about your life, increase your ability to handle difficult emotions and problems, improve your relationships, increase self-esteem and self-confidence, and much more.
Individual therapy can be used to address the following issues:
- Chronic Pain
- Emotional Regulation
